Sometimes your doctor will order nerve conduction tests to be sure that you do have carpal tunnel syndrome. This is a test where they put electrodes on your forearm and hand to test how fast the nerves conduct the electric stimulus. That test can feel a bit unpleasant, because they give you small electrical shocks. To treat carpal tunnel syndrome, your doctor may give you an injection into your wrist to reduce the swelling in the carpal tunnel. If that relieves your painful symptoms, then they might try giving you a wrist brace to wear to take the pressure off your wrist to see if that will relieve the pressure and allow your nerve to heal. If those things don’t work, you may be sent to a surgeon who can cut the band of fibrous tissue in front of your wrist to relieve the pressure in your carpal tunnel permanently.

If your nerves are damaged from high blood glucose levels, they may be more inflamed and fragile than normal. If the median nerve is already damaged from diabetes, even a small amount of extra pressure in the carpal tunnel can push it “over the edge.” Poor diabetes control and some of the drugs used to treat diabetes can sometimes cause you to retain fluid. When fluid builds up in the tissues under the skin, we call that edema. Diabetes makes it more likely that your carpal tunnel will get tighter and makes your median nerve more vulnerable to the pressure from that tightness, and so carpal tunnel syndrome is more common in people with diabetes.

Your wrist is made up of a number of small bones held close together. The medical term for this is carpus. On the front of your wrist (the same side as the palm of your hand), a lot of important things pass from your arm into your hand. These include tendons connecting the muscles in your forearm with your fingers, blood vessels to supply your hand with nutrients, and a nerve called the median nerve. This nerve helps part of your hand to feel pain and also helps the muscles near your thumb to work properly. All of these blood vessels, tendons, and nerves pass in front of the wrist bones (the carpal bones). A tight band of fibrous tissue passes in front of the nerves, blood vessels, and tendons, enclosing them in a tight tunnel (called the carpal tunnel). If the tunnel gets too tight (perhaps because your wrist swells with fluid), then the median nerve can get trapped, crushed, and damaged.

This can cause pain in your hand and forearm and weakness in the thumb muscles. The symptoms are often worse when you wake up in the morning and get better during the day, but they can also get worse if you have to use your hands and fingers a lot at your work.

My ex has only just informed me that a shadow was found on my daughter’s x-ray when she visited her orthodontist back in March 2010, and that the dentist informed the relevant hospital about this. My questions are 1) If a shadow is found on an x-ray should an appointment not be made a lot quicker than 10 months later? and 2) What can the shadow represent?
