This question is not for me, but on the behalf of a friend. He has paranoid schizophrenia, and I believe this is a major component in his dreams being violent, sadistic and very negative. He is also suicidal and most likely depressed, along with a very downputting family and home life, and no social interaction outside of the internet. He tries to avoid sleeping, because it makes him feel even worse, but it is both unhealthy and useless, as he cannot avoid the dreams when he must sleep.
Because of the risk of suicide, I am wary as to what to give him, as overdose is a threat I cannot ignore, and he knows that too. He is only seventeen, and I live on the opposite side of the world, so I am unable to look after him as much as he needs, or to monitor his intake. His parents are useless, and he has very little money.
He takes no medication as it is, and he is highly against taking anything to treat his schizophrenia, as he fears it will make it worse.
So I ask, what could I advise him to take or to do – preferably something that can be bought over the counter, as he has no money to see doctors, and is indeed somewhat afraid of them – which would allow him to sleep without dreaming? This would make a powerful impact on his life if it could be achieved, and I do not know where else to turn but to ask here.
Thank you for any help or advice you can offer.
