Does diabetes ever go away on its own?

It is incredibly rare for diabetes to ever go away on its own, although
there are certain situations when it seems like it has gone away for
good. Imagine that your body makes less insulin than it should. It can make just enough to keep your blood glucose normal, if it isn’t asked
to work too hard. If you eat a healthy diet, keep your weight down,
exercise regularly, and stay happy and stress-free, then your blood
glucose levels will stay normal. But imagine that something changes
in your life to make you need much more insulin. You get sick and
need to be put on high doses of corticosteroid drugs (like
Prednisone). Suddenly you develop diabetes. If you can come off of
the steroids, your diabetes might go away completely. Or imagine
that you’ve gained a hundred pounds over many years and now have
diabetes. If you could dramatically and permanently lose all of that
weight (as a result of gastric bypass surgery, for example), then your
diabetes might seem to go away completely.
Pregnancy is another example of something that can lead to
diabetes. When a woman gets pregnant, she needs to make more
insulin to meet the extra demands of her growing body and growing
baby. If she isn’t able to increase the amount of insulin her body
makes, she’ll get diabetes during her pregnancy. This is called gestational diabetes. Once the baby is born and her body returns to
normal, her diabetes might go away completely.
In all of the situations described above there’s a chance that diabetes
will come back. As we get older, we gradually make less insulin, and
many of us also become more resistant to insulin, especially if we gain weight or have more aches and pains and stresses in our life. So people who had diabetes when they were on steroids when they were younger and women who had diabetes while they were pregnant have a higher chance that the diabetes will come back later in their lives.
