I am not overweight, so why do I have diabetes?

Two things need to happen for anyone to get diabetes. If you don’t make enough insulin, then your body will not be able to keep your glucose level in the normal range. Type 2 diabetes is more common in people who are overweight because the extra weight makes your body resistant to the effects of insulin. Whether you get diabetes or not depends on how little insulin you make and how insulin resistant you are. If you are normal weight but have developed diabetes, this means that your body doesn’t make very much insulin at all. Although it is still possible that your diabetes might be able to be controlled by pills, it is more likely that you will need insulin shots to help keep your blood glucose close to normal.
