What parts of the body play a role in the immune system?

The major components of the immune system include the bone marrow and thymus, which manufacture and process white blood cells; the tissues, vessels, organs and nodes of the lymphatic system, which filters and conveys a fluid known as lymph and produces various white blood cells; and the white blood cells themselves. These blood cells, or leukocytes, are present throughout the body in both blood and lymph and play an important role in recognizing and fending off foreign substances.

What exactly is the immune system?

The immune system is an elaborate network of organs, glands, tissues and cells that work together to protect the body from disease organisms such as bacteria, viruses and parasites. It protects you against diseases that you’ve already encountered as well as those for which you’ve been immunized. It also helps you fight infection once your body has been invaded by a disease organism.
