Can improving your diet and doing more exercise really prevent type 2 diabetes?
It really can. There was a landmark study published a few years ago called the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) that looked into this.
When is it helpful to measure the insulin level in a person’s blood?
It’s rarely helpful to measure the amount of insulin in a person’s
blood. Suppose there are two people with the same normal fasting
blood glucose (less than 100 mg/dL.) But if we measure the amount
of insulin in their blood, we find that one of them has a much higher
insulin level than the other.
Can insulin resistance be treated?
Several things can improve insulin resistance. When you lose
weight, your body will start to put more receptors on the surface
of your cells, and you’ll become less insulin resistant.
Is diabetes caused by having too little insulin or by being resistant to insulin?
People don’t get diabetes unless their bodies make too little insulin.
Even someone who is very resistant to insulin will have normal
blood glucose levels if he or she can make enough insulin to overcome the resistance.
What is insulin resistance?
Certain organs in our bodies need insulin to help them work. When the cells of those organs have trouble using insulin, we call it insulin resistance.
